Description
Garde Républicaine de Paris – ca. 1870–1914
Original shako/helmet plate of the Garde Républicaine de Paris, dating from the period of the Third French Republic. This plate was worn on the ceremonial headgear of the Parisian Garde Républicaine, the prestigious unit responsible for protecting state institutions and official ceremonies.
The plaque is made of brass and features the coat of arms of the city of Paris: a ship on waves, crowned with the Parisian mural crown and surrounded by a laurel wreath. At the top of the shield are the fleurs-de-lis, the historical symbol of Île-de-France.
At the bottom is the ribbon with the text:
Fluctuat nec mergitur = “He is buffeted by the waves, but he does not sink”
