In 1991, Turkey requested an air defense unit from the Dutch government to protect against potential Iraqi Scud missile attacks. The Dutch government decided to send the 502nd and 503rd Squadrons of the 5th Guided Weapons Group (5GGW), consisting of 177 personnel and 10 Patriot launchers, to the Diyarbakir air base in eastern Turkey (Operation Wild Turkey).
