Description

A rare original French armband with the inscriptions “GENDARMERIE AUXILIAIRE” and “HILES GENDARMERIE” from World War II.

This armband was worn by members of the Gendarmerie Auxiliaire, the French auxiliary gendarmerie. This involved support personnel who assisted the regular gendarmerie with tasks such as surveillance, control, and policing duties. The armband served as an identification mark, so that the wearer was recognizable as a member of this service.

The armband fits within the history of Vichy France, the French state that collaborated with Germany during the German occupation.

The armband is made of blue-grey fabric and features metal clasps. The printed inscriptions are still clearly visible. The overall item is in good, used condition.
