Rare Imperial Russian Silver Sports Pendant Cycling Club St. Petersburg 84 Silver - R3

Hasenbos Militaria

Description

Very rare original cycling pendant from the Russian Empire, belonging to the С.-Петербургское общество велосипедной езды (Saint Petersburg Cycling Society).

The front features a beautifully elaborate wheel, surrounded by a detailed laurel wreath. Centrally located is a striking winged motif, symbolizing speed and the progress of cycling. Overlaid is a blue enameled ribbon with the text:

«ОБЩ. ВЕЛОСИП. ѢЗДЫ»
(Obshchestvo Velosipednoy Yezdy – Cycling Society).

This is a historically interesting sports medal/token from the period when cycling was rapidly gaining popularity in the Russian Empire. The Saint Petersburg Cycling Society was founded in 1893 and was presided over by Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich Romanov. Among the founders and prominent members were individuals from leading aristocratic families.

The specialized catalog Dyakov lists this version as 1199.1, with a rarity classification for silver of R3 (very rare and difficult to find). The same catalog refers to Smirnov 1134

Hallmark: clearly visible with the Russian 84-silver hallmark , applied to the silver ring. The designation 84 stands for a silver content of 84 zolotnik, corresponding to approximately 875/1000 silver.
On the back at the top, there is another marking; its meaning is unknown.

According to the catalog, this type of pendant/medal is known in three metal finishes: gold (Au), silver (Ar), and bronze/copper (Ae).
